Is working from home going to become a permanent shift?

February 17, 2021

Now we’re in lockdown 3.0, many of us are back working from home.  With a large proportion of workers having worked remotely since March 2020, office life seems worlds away.  In this post, we seek to answer the question ‘is working from home going to become a permanent shift?’

What does the future of work look like for Estate Agents?

Whilst the property industry remains open throughout the third national lockdown, Estate Agents are encouraged to work from home where possible.  Now, experts are predicting there will be a fundamental shift in how businesses across the board will use offices in the future, with a much greater degree of flexibility set to stay after the pandemic ends.  A survey by The Guild of Property Professionals reveals that while over 80 percent of estate agencies believe traditional bricks and mortar offices will remain important - and that this would continue to form the basis of their business model - there are different views as to what form this would take.

According to reports, the majority of CFOs believe that the pandemic is set to trigger a fundamental change in the business environment. It’s predicted that working from home, at least on a part-time basis, will become a permanent feature in almost everyone’s working lives in a post-COVID-19 world, which will, in turn, mean a greater degree of flexibility around working hours, amongst other things.

A study by KPMG suggests that offices will largely become “collaboration hubs” where many workers come to meet rather than sit at desks and perform tasks individually which can be effectively completed at home.

Large technology firms were some of the first to make the switch to remote working for all their staff, building on pre-existing infrastructure such as office chat groups, remote access to critical tools, and the fact that much knowledge work can be carried out remotely.

What does a shift to working from home mean for the property sector?

Before the first lockdown, employed Britons were willing to live an average of 23 miles away from their workplace, but later in 2020 that changed to 56 miles away. The shift to home working has made people rethink their living specifications, with people now wanting more outdoor space as well as space for a home office.
